Q4 What are part names of a watch?

The example illustrated below shows a typical analog watch with a leather strap.

(A-1) Hour mark
Generally, bar or dot-like scale marks called abbreviations are used.
(A-2) Lug
This portion connects the case and strap. A monolithic metal band(bracelet)which type is called “an integral type.”
(A-3) Dial
This is the indicator panel with the abbreviations numeric, the dial is taken as the face of a watch.
(A-4) Second hand
There may be no second hand.
A watch with a second hand at the center as illustrated is called a three-hand type.
(A-5) Case
This is a generic name for the glass, bezel, case band, and case back. The inside mechanism may also be called a movement.


(B-1) Lug hole
This hole is used for fitting a spring bar. The bar is removed and re-fitted to attach a strap.
(B-2) Free loop(Free ring)
This is used to fasten the excess portion of the six o'clock side strap. It is fixed to the strap.
(B-3) Free loop(Free ring)
The purpose of the loop is the same with that of the fixed loop. It can slide on the strap.


An example of a digital watch with a band(bracelet)is shown below.

(C-1) Liquid crystal
The panel displays the time of a day, calendar and other pieces of information. It is equivalent to the indicator section (dial and hands) of an analogue watch.
(C-2) Case
This is a generic name for the glass, case band, and case back. The inside mechanism may also be called a module.
(C-3) Push button
This button is pushed to set the time, calendar, etc.
In this example, there are four buttons.
(C-4) Lug
This portion connects the case and band.
(C-5) Panel cover
This plate-like part covers the display section and determines the panel view.
Generally, it includes supplements and marks for time display.


(D-1) End piece
This end part connects the metal band to the case. It may also be called a lug end.
(D-2) Band
The metal band is also called a bracelet.
(D-3) Clasp
This part connects the 12-o'clock side band to the 6-o'clock side one. It sometimes has the band-length adjustment function.
