1-2. 2010 Japanese Watch Exports & Domestic Shipments by Type & Component Ratio (Complete Watches)

  • The 2010 shipments of Japanese complete watches under JGO increased to 65.9 million units and 167.3 billion yen by 16% in units and 11% in amount respectively compared to the previous year.
  • An analysis by type in units in comparison with the previous year shows +13% and +26% for alanog quartz and digital watches respectively, and +9% for mechanical watches.
  • As for the Component ratio, analog quartz accounted for 66%, digital quartz for 30%, and mechanical watches for 4% in terms of units.
  • For additional information, the 2010 total shipments of Japanese complete watches and watch movements under JGO increased to 673 million units and 225.7billion yen by 24% in units and 15% in amount respectively compared to the previous year.

  • The 2010 exports of Japanese complete watches (including those from overseas facilities and ports) increased in units by 18% to 59.2 million units, and in value by 14% to 99.2 billion yen respectively, in relation to the previous year.
  • Regarding destination of exported Japanese complete watches (including those from overseas facilities and ports), all destinations except Oceania show an increase in value, in relation to the previous year.

  • The 2010 domestic shipments of Japanese complete watches increased by 5% in units and 6% in value in relation to the previous year, amounting to 6.6 million units, and 68.1 billion yen in value.
  • The shipments share of radio controlled watches against all watches was 23% in units, and 40% in value.


NOTE Development of World Watch Production by Type (Estimates)

There is no official data on world watch production. Shown below are the figures estimated by JCWA (Japan Clock & Watch Association), based on estimated world watch movement production.

  • The 2010 world watch production is estimated to show an increase in units by 21% amounting to 1,050 million units, in relation to the previous year.
  • The world watch production by type is estimated to show increase in analog quartz by 21%, in digital quartz by 22% and in mechanical watches by 16% respectively, in relation to the previous year.
  • As for Component ratio by type, analog quartz , digital quartz, and mechanical watches kept the same level as the previous year.

  • Others refer to Instrument Panel Clock & clocks of a similar type for vehicles, aircraft, spacecraft, or vessels, and other clocks.
  • The 2010 shipments of Japanese complete clocks under JGO increased to 17.3 million units and 30.3 billion yen by 11% in units and 8% in amount respectively compared to the previous year.
  • An analysis by type in units in comparison with the previous year shows +12% for table clocks and +8% for wall clocks respectively.
  • As for the Component ratio, table clocks accounted for 59%, and wall clocks for 24% in terms of units.
  • For additional information,the 2010 total shipments of Japanese complete clocks and clock movements under JGO increased to 23 million units and 30.8 billion yen by 13% in units and 8% in value respectively compared to the previous year.

  • The 2010 exports of Japanese complete clocks (including those from overseas facilities and ports) increased in units by 19% to 4.8 million units, and in value by 8% to 3.9 billion yen, in relation to the previous year.
  • Regarding destination of exported Japanese complete clocks (including those from overseas facilities and ports), all destinations except N.America and Middle East show an increase in value, in relation to the previous year.

  • The 2010 domestic shipments of Japanese complete clocks increased by 8% both in units and value in relation to the previous year, amounting to 12.5 million units, and 26.3 billion yen in value.
  • The shipments share of radio controlled clcoks against all clocks was 46% in units, and 58% in value.
