Remark:
1) Japanese Global Operation (JGO) refers to business activities of Japan's watch & clock industry including overseas production and exports from overseas ports.
2) The calculation basis for the value of domestic shipments has been altered since 2008 for both watches and clocks.

1-1. Development of Japanese Watch Exports & Domestic Shipments by Type (Complete Watches)

* The figures of the value in 2008 and after are incomparable to those of previous years.

1-2. 2009 Japanese Watch Exports & Domestic Shipments by Type & Component Ratio (Complete Watches)

  • The 2009 shipments of Japanese complete watches under JGO decreased to 57 million units and 151.2 billion yen by 19% in unit and 23% by amount respectively compared to the previous year.
  • An analysis by type in units in comparison with the previous year shows -19% and -17% for alanog quartz and digital watches respectively, and -24% for mechanical watches.
  • As for the Component ratio, analog quartz accounted for 68%, digital quartz for 27%, and mechanical watches for 5% in terms of units, the same as the previous year.
  • For additional information, the 2009 total shipments of Japanese complete watches and watch movements under JGO decreased to 543 million units by 16% compared to the previous year, and the value amounted to 196.9 billion yen with the decline of 23%.
*Figures in parentheses in Fig.2 and 3 show variations in points by comparison with the previous year.

1-3. 2009 Japanese Watch Exports by Type & Component Ratio (Complete Watches)

1-4. 2009 World Distribution of Japanese Watch Exports (Complete Watches)

  • The 2009 exports of Japanese complete watches (including those from overseas facilities and ports) decreased in units by 20% to 50.4 million units, and in value by 27% to 87.1 billion yen respectively, in relation to the previous year.
  • Regarding destination of exported Japanese complete watches (including those from overseas facilities and ports), all destinations show decrease both in unit and value, in relation to the previous year.
*Figures in parentheses in Fig.4 through 7 show variations in points by comparison with the previous year.

1-5. 2009 Japanese Watch Domestic Shipments by Type & Component Ratio (Complete Watches)

  • The 2009 domestic shipments of Japanese complete watches decreased in units by 13% in relation to the previous year, amounting to 6.3 million units, and the value amounted to 64.1 billion yen with the decline of 18%.
  • The shipment share of radio controlled watches against all watches was 24% in units, and 39% in value.

NOTE Development of World Watch Production by Type (Estimates)

There is no official data on world watch production. Shown below are the figures estimated by JCWA (Japan Clock & Watch Association), based on estimated world watch movement production.
