production and exports from overseas ports.
2) The calculation basis for the value of domestic shipments has been altered for both watches and clocks.

1-1. Development of Japanese Watch Exports & Domestic Shipments by Type (Complete Watches)

*The figures of the value in 2008 are incomparable to those of previous years.

1-2. 2008 Japanese Watch Exports & Domestic Shipments by Type & Component Ratio (Complete Watches)

  • The 2008 shipments of Japanese complete watches under JGO decreased in units by 11% from the previous year, amounting to 70 million units, and the value amounted to 197.1 billion yen.
  • An analysis by type in units in comparison with the previous year shows -12% and -10% for alanog quartz and digital watches respectively, and +4% for mechanical watches.
  • As for the Component ratio, analog quartz accounted for 68%, digital quartz for 27%, and mechanical watches for 5% in terms of units.
  • For additional information, the 2008 total shipments of Japanese complete watches and watch movements under JGO decreased in units by 7% in relation to the previous year, amounting to 645 million units, and the value amounted to 254.4 billion yen.
